Detlef Schäfer (born July 23, 1954 ) was a football player in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR Football Association . He played there for the BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau .

Before Schäfer came to the league club BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau in July 1981, he had played with the juniors of Halleschen FC Chemie and with the lower class BSG HTB Halle. In November 1979 he was drafted for an 18-month military service and during this time he was able to play with the Vorwärts Army Sports Association in Wolfen, initially in the third-class Halle district league , and after relegation from summer 1980 in the district soccer division.

After his discharge from the army, he joined the league promoted BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau in July 1981. Without adjustment difficulties in the league, Schäfer played from the start of the season as a left defender. On the 9th day of play he suffered an injury that forced him to pause up to four short appearances until May 1982. Only for the last five point games did he return to the Schkopauer defense. Overall, he played 18 times in the league, it was not enough for a goal. When defender Schäfer was injured on October 30, 1981, Schkopau had already conceded 37 goals, after his last league game it was 77, and Chemie Buna, the worst team of the season, had to be relegated from the league after just one year.

Schäfer played part of the 1982/83 season for Schkopau in the GDR league, but ended his career as a competitive athlete before the end of the season.
