Athletic career

At the age of 20, Bernhard Kopf joined the Schkopauer Company Sports Association (BSG) Chemie BUNA in 1972 . The first team had just been relegated from the second-rate GDR league and was fighting for promotion in the Halle district league . With the help of Kopf, this was achieved within a year. From 1973 to 1981 Kopf played first as a striker, later in midfield in the GDR league. Of the 176 point games played during this time, he completed 138 matches and scored 47 goals. In the 1974/75 season he was Schkopauer's top scorer with eleven goals. In the 1980/81 season, the BSG Chemie achieved promotion to the GDR league. Head was involved with twelve league games, one goal, as well as in all eight promotion games and another three goals. In the league season Kopf fought with his teammate Günter Krosse for a first division appearance in the midfield of Chemie BUNA, but only came up with six nominations. He was in the starting eleven four times, but was only used once over the entire game. However, he was successful with two major leagues. After a year, BUNA Schkopau had to relegate again, and Kopf played his last GDR league season in 1982/83, in which, at the age of 30/31, he again completed 16 of 22 league games and scored his last two league goals across the GDR. Within nine seasons he had come to six league games with two goals and 154 GDR league games with 49 goals. He then ended his footballing career with the second team of BSG Chemie BUNA in the district league.
