Jewish cemetery in Hungen

The Jewish cemetery in Hungen , a town in the central Hessian district of Gießen , was probably laid out in the 19th century. The Jewish cemetery with the address Am Judenfriedhof , south of the city, is a protected cultural monument .

“As early as 1563, Count Bernhard II zu Solms-Braunfels gave the Jews who had lived in Hungen since the 15th century their own burial place. It is probably the cemetery 'auf der Schütt' northwest of the old town center, which had been in existence for 40 years and for which funeral money had to be paid.

It is not known when the new Jewish cemetery, located south of the city between Friedberger Strasse and the railway line, was created. It covers an irregular, 3177 m² area and was also used as a burial place for the Jews of Langsdorf , Inheiden and Utphe . "

The last funeral took place in May 1946. The deceased, Jeremias Oppenheim, had returned with his wife from the Theresienstadt concentration camp after the war .
