Jewish cemetery in Steinbach

The Jewish cemetery in Steinbach , a district of the Fernwald community in the central Hessian district of Gießen , was established in the 1880s. The Jewish cemetery on Goethestrasse is a protected cultural monument .

“The Jewish cemetery with around eleven tombstones from the early 20th century is located on a grass field on the edge of the built-up area. Some stones are only present in fragments, in some cases only the crowns have been preserved. A memorial stone erected in 1988 to commemorate the Reichskristallnacht is located in the northern corner between the gravestones set up along the surrounding wall . "

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the cemetery was destroyed by SA men. In 1945 the cemetery had to be restored as far as possible on the instructions of the American military.

After that, the cemetery was left neglected again. In 1963 the unoccupied part of the cemetery was redesigned into a green area with a children's playground . The occupied part of the cemetery was prepared as a memorial.
