Helmut Brandtner (born October 14, 1954 ) was a soccer player in the GDR . In the top division of the Oberliga he played for BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau .

Brandtner, a locksmith by profession, came in 1978 at the age of 23 from the third-class district league Magdeburg from the BSG Empor Klein Wanzleben to the BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau, which was playing in the second-class GDR league at the time. Apart from a one-year reservist service in the GDR army between 1979 and 1980, he was active at BSG Chemie until 1985.

The 1.78 m tall striker was part of the Schkopau surprise team in 1980/81, which was promoted to the league. Brandtner played 28 of the 22 point and eight promotion games. He scored twelve goals, four of them in the promotion round. At the age of 26, he began his only league season in the summer of 1981. Coach Olaf Keller used him as a center forward from the start, and he was also in the starting eleven in the first four point games. Except for one game, however, he was always substituted and was only a substitute from the eleventh game day. By the end of the season he made 22 appearances in the 26 point games played, but only played four of them over the entire duration of the game. His only top division goal was scored on the 19th match day when he equalized in the 85th minute of the 1-1 draw at Halleschen FC. With this draw, Schkopau was able to improve to the penultimate place in the table, but at the end of the season the team was the worst league team with a goal difference of 21:77 and was second class again after only one year.

Brandtner played three more seasons in the GDR league with BSG Chemie Buna Schkopau. At the end of the 1984/85 season he ended his career as a football player in the performance area at the age of 31.
