Museum ship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A museum ship is, in general usage, a ship (possibly also a boat ) that can be visited like a museum .

Most of the museum ships are decommissioned, some of them are still fully functional, older or special ships that are rare or unique in terms of their design or history, or because comparable ships have become rare due to scrapping and other losses. They are either firmly moored on a pier in the water or are exhibited in dry docks or on land, sometimes in their own buildings. A few museum ships are still sailing out and some of them offer occasional rides.

Many museum ships belong to shipping museums such as the German Maritime Museum or associations that take care of the preservation and restoration of the ships.
