Vor Frue Kirke (Frauenkirche) |
The port town of Kalundborg [ kalonˈbɔːʔʀ ] (German outdated Kahlenburg ) in the Danish region of Sjælland (Zealand) is located on the Kalundborg Fjord of the same name , in the north of the Great Belt . During the 2007 municipal reform , Kalundborg became the administrative seat of the newly formed Kalundborg Municipality .
history
The castle from which the city emerged was founded in 1170 by Esbern Snare , brother of Archbishop Absalon von Lund . The Vor Frue Kirke is said to have started as early as 1160 and was intended as the family grave church.
Peter Feddersen was mayor here from 1841.
Economy and Infrastructure
The city is the seat of the radio station Kalundborg and the end of a railway line from Roskilde . In addition, the oil industry with refineries is located in Kalundborg . The Asnæsværket is one of the largest electricity producer in the country. There is a local newspaper in town, the Kalundborg Folkeblad .
There is a ferry connection to Ballen on the island of Samsø . The ferry service from Kalundborg to Aarhus was discontinued on October 12, 2013.
Somewhat away from the city's previous port, the new Westhafen (Ny Vesthavn) has been built as a universal port for around 35 million euros since October 2017. The 330,000 m² facility with a quay length of 500 meters is due to go into operation in March 2019. The container handling should here be relocated and a handling capacity of 35,000 TEU have a year. This new deep-water port will also gain importance for the capital Copenhagen due to the accessibility for deep seagoing vessels , since they cannot enter the port there fully loaded.
