In the municipality there are remains of a settlement from the 9th or 10th century. The first documented mention, as Melne , comes from the year 1226. In 1333 the village was sold by Henning Schlieff to the Damitz family from Kolberg , who remained in their possession until 1776 and was then administered by a board of creditors. Around the time from the 14th to the 16th century there was a trading and fishing port in Groß Möllen. Groß Möllen was bought in 1804 by the Schmeling family for 7000 thalers from a member of the Below family.

Großmöllen developed into a holiday destination at the turn of the 20th century, which was particularly popular with guests from Berlin, Szczecin and Köslin. In 1905 Großmöllen was connected to the railway network by the small railway company Güdenhagen – Groß Möllen . The rail connection was replaced in 1913 by the Köslin city and beach tram to Köslin. The number of bathers per year, which had been over a thousand before the First World War , fell slightly after the end of the war. In 1938 the beach tram was shut down and replaced by a power post line.

Towards the end of the Second World War , the region around Köslin was occupied by the Red Army . After the end of the war, Großmöllen was renamed Mielno . The immigration of Poles and Ukrainians began; Germans who had not previously fled were generally expelled . On January 1, 2017, Mielno was promoted to town.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community lives largely from tourism, it was already considered a health resort at the end of the 19th century . There is also fishing. There is no industry. Approx. 34% of the community area is used for agriculture, almost 10% as forest area.

In November 2011, the Polish energy company PGE announced that the Gąski district would be one of three potential locations for the construction of a nuclear power plant . In a referendum in February 2012, which was not legally binding, 2237 citizens out of 4,100 eligible voters spoke out against and 125 in favor of the building.
