Peter Vilhelm Glob (born February 20, 1911 in Kalundborg , † July 20, 1985 in Djursland ) was a Danish prehistoric archaeologist , museum director and imperial antiquar ( Danish Rigsantikvar ).

Life

PV Glob was the son of the painter Johannes Ejner Glob (1882–1955). He studied prehistoric archeology with Johannes Brøndsted at the University of Copenhagen and became an assistant in 1934 and an inspector in 1937 at the Danish National Museum . In 1945 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the individual grave culture . From 1949 to 1960 he taught as a professor at Aarhus University . At the same time he was head of the Prehistoric Museum (now Museum Moesgård ). In 1951 he founded the Jutland Archaeological Society ( Jysk arkæologisk selskab), of which he was general secretary until 1962, before becoming its president. In 1960 he succeeded Brøndsted as director of the National Museum in Copenhagen and as Rigsantikvar. In 1981 he retired.

As a student, Glob took part in the Danish three-year expedition 1931-1934, which was headed by Lauge Koch (1892-1964) in 1932/33 . His first publication was the results of his excavations of Eskimo settlements in East Greenland . Glob became famous beyond Denmark for his work on Barkjær , one of the Konens Høj systems , on the typology of battle axes in the individual burial culture in 1944 and 1965 on bog bodies . With his book Mosefolket about Danish bog corpses he gave new impetus to European bog corpse research. In 1969, as a result of his 30 years of study, he published a complete overview of the Danish rock art . In addition, he carried out research in Bahrain in 1953 , in Qatar in 1957 , in Kuwait , Abu Dhabi and Oman in 1958 and, from 1964, in Saudi Arabia .
