Karl Kersten

Karl Kersten (born August 8, 1909 in Stade ; † July 24, 1992 ) was a German prehistoric scientist in Kiel or Schleswig , who made a name for himself with his research on the Nordic Bronze Age .

Life

After graduating from high school at the Athenaeum Stade , he received his doctorate with a post-war thesis on The Finds of the Older Bronze Age in Pomerania. Mention should be made of his many years of work in the research project Finds from the Older Bronze Age of the Nordic District in Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, which was funded by the DFG until 2004 and now by the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz (project leader Karl-Heinz Willroth ) will be carried.

Kersten worked on several districts as part of the Schleswig-Holstein archaeological survey . From October 1937 he was employed at the Provincial Office for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Land Surveys and Archaeological Preservation of the Province of Schleswig-Holstein , which was affiliated with the Museum of Prehistoric Antiquities (until 1936 Museum of Patriotic Antiquities ) in Kiel, of which Kersten took over from Herbert Jankuhn in 1944 . In 1946 it was relocated to Schleswig (today Gottorf Castle ). During National Socialism , Kersten was part of the Jankuhn Command, which organized the illegal art theft (Pringle 2006).

After the war he was co-editor of Offa magazine from 1959 to 1973 .
