Derince is a Turkish port and district town and a district in the greater Istanbul area. The city is located in the province of Kocaeli , about 80 kilometers east of the Bosphorus on the northeast coast of the Marmara Sea near the city of Izmit .
The district is a district of the metropolitan commune ( Büyükşehir belediyesi ) Kocaeli. It borders on Korfez to the west, İzmit and Kandıra to the east, Istanbul province to the north and the Gulf of İzmit to the south.

The O-4 motorway ( European route 80 ) and the national road D 100 run through the city . There is also an Anatolian Railway station (Istanbul – Ankara line) and a port for railway ferries in the direction of the Black Sea (Ukraine, Georgia).
The city has a seaport that is used to ship the production of the Hyundai Assan Otomotiv . The port is operated by the state railway company Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları . The port has an area of 1,200,000 m 2 . 1,500,000 vehicles, 10,000,000 bulk goods and 2,500,000 containers are handled annually.
