Karamürsel (in antiquity Πραίνετος, Praenetus ) is a district of the Turkish province of Kocaeli and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi (city municipality) Kocaeli. The place is about 30 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital İzmit .
The district is located in the southwest of the province on the south bank of the Marmara Sea . It is bordered by Gölcük to the east, Bursa province to the south, Yalova province to the west and İzmit Bay to the north. The D-130 highway from İzmit to Yalova runs through the village, mostly along the shore . In Karamürsel the D-595 branches off to the south, which leads around the lake İznik Gölü via İnegöl and Tavşanlı to Simav in the province of Kütahya . Part of the Samanlı Dağları Mountains and the Çamdibi Barajı Reservoir are located in the south of the district .
Praenetus is a former diocese of the Roman Catholic Church .
