Körfez (in German golf ) is a district of the Turkish province of Kocaeli and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi (city municipality) Kocaeli. The place is about 12 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital İzmit .
The district is located in the center of the province on the north shore of the Marmara Sea . It borders on Dilovası and Gebze to the west, the province of Istanbul to the north, Derince to the east and the Gulf of İzmit to the south. The European route 80 , which comes from Edirne to Ağrı and the Iraqi border, runs through Körfez, roughly following the coast , and parallel to it the D-100 highway. About 15 kilometers northwest of the district town is the 647 meter high Karakayalı Tepesi mountain . In the village of Körfez, directly on the Sea of Marmara, there is a Tüpraş refinery .
The Anatolian Railway runs through Körfez from Istanbul - Haydarpaşa to Ankara .
