history

The company's origins go back to İPRAŞ (İstanbul Petrol Rafinerisi A.Ş.), which was founded by the American Caltex Company (now part of Chevron ). In 1983, İPRAŞ and three other public refineries were nationalized under the Tüpraş umbrella. Partial privatization began in 1991 when 2.5% of the shares were sold to the public as part of an IPO. By 2005 this rate had been increased to 49% through a series of secondary issues. In 2005, a consortium of Koç Holding and Royal Dutch Shell paid over $ 4 billion to acquire the remaining 51% of the shares.
