history

Caltex is an acronym for California Texas Oil Company , a company founded by Texaco and Standard Oil of California in 1936 . The aim of the two oil companies was to only operate outside the USA with their joint subsidiary in order to gain more market shares in other countries together.

California Texas Oil Company was renamed Caltex Petroleum Corporation in 1968. The main office was in Dallas . In 1984 Standard Oil of California merged with Gulf Oil and changed the company name to Chevron Corporation . In 1998 the international Caltex Petroleum Corporation was renamed Caltex Corp. In 1999, the company moved from Dallas to Singapore . Two years later, the two parent companies merged to form ChevronTexaco (from 2005 Chevron Corporation).

Germany

In the Federal Republic of Germany, Caltex sold mineral oil products from 1956 to 1969 via a network of filling stations operated by Tank-Kraft GmbH in Hanover, a subsidiary of Braunkohle-Petrol AG ( West Berlin ).

The architect Walter Hämer gave the more than 800 petrol stations an independent appearance on German streets. The daring and futuristic architecture gave the stations a high recognition factor . The cantilevered concrete roof, which until then hadn't been seen anywhere else in this form, lay like a protective sheet over the tank attendant's house and the tank island. Two dominant flanks added elegance and sophistication to the construction. The modular construction type in white and green design always provided for the same gas station, which could be supplemented on the right or left by a car maintenance hall. A good dozen former Caltex stations have survived to this day - most of them survived through being used in a workshop or at least close to an automobile.

In addition, from the 1960s the company operated the Caltex refinery in Raunheim (Hesse) with a large tank farm that was connected to the Rhine-Main pipeline (RMR). The company premises were located right next to the A3 . The refinery was later taken over by RWE Dea . After the systems had been out of operation for a long time, the site was acquired by Fraport in 2004 .

The Caltex brand is still protected in Germany.
