The Caltex Raunheim refinery was an oil refinery between the Hessian towns of Raunheim-Mönchhof and Kelsterbach near Frankfurt am Main .

history

The Caltex refinery was built on the site of the Mönchhof estate in the early 1960s . The refinery's processing capacity in 1968 was 4.5 million tons of crude oil a year. A catalytic cracker could convert 480,000 tons of heavy fuel oil into gasoline and diesel per year. The reformer had an annual output of 161,000 tons.

On January 18, 1966 at around 10 a.m. there was a burst pipe due to severe frost in the refinery's ethylene plant, from which liquid hydrocarbon escaped. An explosive gas-air mixture formed, which led to the explosion . The explosion could be heard within ten kilometers and the shock wave destroyed many window panes. A total of five people were killed; they either died in the explosion or later in hospital from their injuries. The extinguishing work lasted two and a half days and was hampered by the extreme frost that made the extinguishing water freeze. Fire brigades from all over the region were involved in this major fire , but could only prevent it from spreading to other parts of the refinery. It was not until October 1966, after the reconstruction, that Hoechst AG could again be supplied with ethylene for plastics production.

The refinery ceased operations on January 31, 1982.

In 2004 Fraport AG acquired the refinery site in order to market it as an office and logistics location under the name of the Mönchhof industrial park . The Caltex oil port and the associated tank farm immediately south of the Raunheim exit on the A3 will continue to be operated. From there, Frankfurt Airport covers around 50% of its Jet A-1 fuel requirements .
