Walter Hämer

Walter Hämer (born September 1, 1899 in Münster ; † February 7, 1974 in Hanover ) was a German architect .

Life

After attending school, Walter Hämer studied architecture from 1916 to 1920, interrupted by military service, at the building trade school in Münster , then at the Dortmund School of Applied Arts and the Düsseldorf State Art Academy . In 1921 he married Dorothea geb. Schömann (1900–1994), the marriage had six children, including the sons Hardt-Waltherr and Peter , who also became architects. From 1923 to 1925, Hämer worked for various architecture firms in Berlin ( Heinrich Lassen , Friedrich August Hartmann , Housing Welfare Society at the Berlin City Administration ). From 1926 to 1931 he worked as a freelance architect in Berlin. In 1931 he became a consultant in the Committee for Standardization in Moscow . In 1932 further activities in the Soviet Union and extensive trips through the country followed. In 1933 he returned to Germany and worked for the Deutsche Reichspost and later for the Luftgaukommando Vienna. From 1939 to 1945 Hämer was a soldier in World War II. In 1945 he became a district architect in Berlin-Tiergarten , from 1947 to 1948 he worked as a town planning officer in Lünen , and in 1949/1950 he taught as a professor of building theory at the University of Architecture and Fine Arts in Weimar . 1950/1951 he headed the planning and construction management department at the Chamber of Agriculture Westphalia-Lippe in Münster, 1951/1952 he worked in the planning office of the city of Hanover, from 1953 to 1973 as a freelance architect in Hanover.
