Ceyhan [ dʒeːˈhan ] is a district in the Turkish province of Adana and has 160,474 inhabitants (as of December 2018). Since a regional reform in 2014, the municipality ( Belediye ) has the same area as the district of the same name ( İlçe ). All previous villages ( Köy ) are now districts ( Mahalle ) of the municipality.

geography

The Ceyhan River flows through Ceyhan , which continues through the Çukurova plain and flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

economy

The essential today economic importance of the city derives from its function as an endpoint of two oil - pipelines and the associated loading port. The older pipeline supplies oil from northern Iraq , unless it has been shut down by attacks. The new pipeline is the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline (BTC), which is heavily criticized by environmentalists. It supplies oil from the Caspian Sea from Azerbaijan and started operations on May 25, 2005. Further pipelines, including those for natural gas from the Caucasus , are in the planning stage.

Agriculture in the Çukurova plain was historically of great economic importance.

archeology

About six kilometers southwest of the district town on the south bank of the Ceyhan, near Sirkeli , is the archaeological site of Sirkeli Höyük with a relief of the Hittite great king Muwatalli II.
