from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Orhan Kemal , actually Mehmet Raşit Öğütçü (born September 15, 1914 in Ceyhan , Adana province , † June 2, 1970 in Sofia ), was a Turkish writer .

Life

Kemal was born in Ceyhan in 1914 as the son of the parliamentarian Abdülkadir Kemali Öğütçü . While still at school, he and his father had to flee to Syria for political reasons . In 1932 he returned to Adana, where he earned his living as a worker. During his military service, he was again sentenced to five years in prison for political reasons. While imprisoned in Bursa Prison , he met the writer Nazım Hikmet , who had a strong influence on his later life. After his release from prison in 1943, he went to Istanbul in 1950 , where he again worked in various professions. Since 1951 he worked exclusively as a writer.

Under the influence of Hikmet, he first published poems under various pseudonyms, and from 1941 also prose. Since 1942 he wrote under the name Orhan Kemal . The first collection of short stories was published in 1949 under the name Ekmek Kavgası (Bread Fight), and in the same year his first novel Baba Evi (Father House). He later also wrote scripts and a play called İspinozlar . The life of the common people and their struggle for a livelihood play a central role in all of his works.

For his work Kardeş Payı (Sibling Share) he received the Sait Faik Literature Prize in 1957 and this again in 1969 for Önce Ekmek (First Bread), for which he also received the Turkish Language Society Prize. After his death in Bulgaria in 1970, his body was transferred to Turkey and buried in the Zincirlikuyu cemetery in Istanbul. A museum for Kemal has been set up in the apartment at 30 Akarsu Caddesi in the Cihangir district of Istanbul.
