The county forms the northern suburbs of the US capital Washington and is bounded in the southwest by the Potomac River , which forms the border with Virginia .

Montgomery County covers an area of ​​1,313 square kilometers; 30 square kilometers (2.29 percent) of this is water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Richard Montgomery

Montgomery County was formed in 1776 from parts of Frederick, Prince George's and Charles Counties. It was named after Richard Montgomery (1738-1775), a general in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence , who fell as the first and highest-ranking general in the Battle of Québec .

A place in the middle of the county, from which today's city of Rockville developed, was chosen as the administrative seat.

In 1791, parts of Montgomery County including the then city of Georgetown were spun off to form the newly founded District of Columbia together with parts of neighboring counties in Maryland and Virginia .

Six sites in Montgomery County have National Historic Landmark status because of their historical significance . 73 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 14, 2017).

The racial the population was composed of 57.5 percent white, 17.2 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 14.0 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 4.0 percent were descended from two or more races.
