Georgetown is the name of a neighborhood in Washington, DC , the capital of the United States of America . Among other things, it houses the university of the same name .

Georgetown was founded in 1751, making it almost 40 years older than Washington. It is named after King George II. It owed its importance in the 18th and early 19th centuries to its location on the Fall Line , which is the westernmost navigable point of the Potomac River . Originally belonging to the state of Maryland , Georgetown was integrated into the newly created District of Columbia in 1871. Economic decline began with the construction of the railway . In the late 19th century, Georgetown was a relatively poor, predominantly black area. Its rise began in the 1930s when the American federal government moved several departments and federal agencies to the neighboring Foggy Bottom neighborhood . On May 28, 1967 Georgetown was a ensemble to a National Historic Landmark explained and in the National Register of Historic Places added. In 1973, the famous horror film The Exorcist was shot in Georgetown . You can still see the house and the stairs from this film to this day.

Today, Georgetown is one of Washington's most expensive residential areas, valued for its proximity to downtown, historic architecture, and urban atmosphere. Its residents are among the former presidential candidate John Kerry , former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and the star reporter of The Washington Post , Bob Woodward .

The embassies of Cameroon , France , Kosovo , Iceland , Liechtenstein , Mongolia , Sweden , Thailand , Ukraine and Venezuela are located in Georgetown.

geography

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs through Georgetown between M Street and K Street.

Georgetown is bounded in the south by the Potomac River and in the east by Rock Creek , Burleith and Glover Park are to the north, and Georgetown University is on the western edge of the district. Much of Georgetown is surrounded by parks and green spaces. Rock Creek Park , Oak Hill Cemetery , Montrose Park, and Dumbarton Oaks are on the northern and eastern fringes of the borough. This is located on cliffs overlooking the river.

The main shopping streets are M Street and Wisconsin Avenue , whose department stores attract visitors. The Washington Harbor Complex on K Street, with its open-air bars and restaurants on the waterfront, is also in the interest of tourists and locals. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is no longer used commercially; the paths on the bank are used for jogging and strolling.
