overview

In addition to the Tofaş automobile factory in Bursa , the business areas also include Otosan , which produces automobiles for Fiat / Peugeot and Ford , household appliances ( Arçelik , Beko , Grundig ), consumer electronics, food ( Tat Gıda Sanayi ), financial services ( Yapı Kredi Bankası ), and energy , Information technology , tourism and construction. Most of the companies are run in cooperation with foreign companies such as Ford, Unicredit , Case New Holland and others.

The company was founded by Vehbi Koç , who initially took over his father's general store in 1926 and later made a fortune by trading light bulbs, automobiles and building materials. Rahmi Koç , the son of the company founder, ran the company from 1984 to 2003 and then passed it on to his son Mustafa Koç († 2016). Along with the Sabancı family, the family is considered to be one of the richest in Turkey.

In addition to entrepreneurship, the family is involved in social and cultural areas. The Vehbi Koç Foundation maintains a university, several schools and the Rahmi M. Koç Museum on the Golden Horn in Istanbul , the largest technology museum in Turkey. The Vehbi Koç Nature Park is located at the Anatolian entrance to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge in Beykoz .

In 2005 the Koç group acquired 51% of the state oil processing company Tüpraş together with the Shell group for over 4 billion euros ; the group thus owns the only oil refinery in the country. Numerous protests preceded the sale.

The group's logo is linked to the founder's family name with a stylized ram ( Aries means koç in Turkish ).
