The ISE 100 or ISE National 100 (also İMKB-100 Index ) is the most important Turkish stock index . The abbreviation ISE stands for Istanbul Stock Exchange . The ISE 100 provides information on the price development of the 100 largest and most profitable companies on the Istanbul Stock Exchange. It thus represents the market segment of the Turkish standard values and is the leading index for the Turkish stock market.

calculation

The ISE 100 is a price index and contains the 100 largest Turkish stocks weighted according to market capitalization . The index level is determined solely on the basis of share prices and only adjusted for income from subscription rights and special payments. Dividend payments are not included in the calculation of the index. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The calculation is made during ISE trading hours from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. local time (8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. CET) and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. local time (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. : 30 p.m. CET) updated every 60 seconds.

The investment universe includes all companies based in Turkey that are listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange. To create a selection list, the companies in the investment universe are sorted in descending order according to market capitalization. The ISE Executive Council decides on the composition and also reviews and adjusts the index every quarter (March, June, September, December). The highest weightings are achieved by the mobile phone provider Turkcell , Akbank and Garantibank International .

Historical overview

ISE 100: Development 1990–2017

The ISE 100 has been calculated since January 1, 1986. The index basis was initially 100 points. With effect from December 27, 1996, there was an index split at a ratio of 100 to 1. This fixed the base value from 1986 at 1 point.

On January 3, 1997, the leading Turkish index closed at 1,035.03 points for the first time above the limit of 1,000 points. On July 16, 1998, the ISE-100 finished trading at 4,530.99 points. Three months later, on October 8, 1998, the index closed at 1,852.28 points, 59.1 percent lower. In the following 15 months, the ISE-100 rose sharply. On December 7, 1999, he passed the 10,000 point mark for the first time with a final score of 10,076.25 points. On December 27, 1999, the share index closed at 19,577.27 points. Since October 1998 the profit is 957.1 percent.

After the speculative bubble in the technology sector ( dot-com bubble ) burst , the index fell to a low of 7,159.66 points by March 29, 2001. That was a decrease of 63.4 percent since December 1999. March 29, 2001 means the end of the downward slide. From spring 2001 the ISE-100 began to rise again. On December 28, 2001, it finished trading at 13,782.76 points, 92.5 percent higher. In the following 6 months the index fell again. On June 26, 2002, it closed at 8,627.42 points. That means a decrease of 37.4 percent since December 2001.

In the next 6 years, the leading Turkish index rose sharply again. On July 9, 2007 it closed with 51,281.85 points for the first time above the limit of 50,000 points. On October 15, 2007, it ended trading at a record high of 58,231.90 points. The profit since June 2002 is 575.0 percent. In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the ISE-100 began to sink again. From autumn 2008 the crisis increasingly affected the real economy. As a result, share prices collapsed worldwide. On November 20, 2008, the index ended trading at a low of 21,228.27 points. Since October 2007 this corresponds to a decrease of 63.5 percent.

November 20, 2008 marks the turning point in the downward trend. From autumn 2008 the ISE 100 was on the way up again. On November 9, 2010, the share index closed at 71,543.26 points. Since the low in November 2008, the profit is 237.0 percent. The weakening of the global economy and the worsening of the euro crisis led to a slump in the Turkish benchmark index. On November 24, 2011, the index ended trading at 49,621.67 points. The loss since the peak on November 9, 2010 is 30.6 percent.

The announcement of new bond purchase programs by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve , initially unlimited, led to a recovery in prices on the stock market. The monetary stimulus played a bigger role in the price formation than the global economic slowdown and the state of the companies. On January 9, 2013, the ISE 100 marked an all-time high with a closing level of 81,149.13 points. The profit since the low on November 24, 2011 is 63.5 percent.
