Kandıra is a district in the Turkish province of Kocaeli . It lies north of the Bay of Izmit and borders the Black Sea in the north . Some villages on the beach are popular holiday areas among local tourists due to their proximity to the major cities of Istanbul , İzmit and Bursa . Some of the most popular holiday villages are Bağirganlı, Kefken, Kerpe , Kumcağız, Sarısu and Seyrek.

Of the total of 50,046 inhabitants (2013 census), 14,744 (2012 census) live in the center.

geography

The highest point is the Babadağı (Mountain of the Fathers) at 400 meters. The main rivers are the Sarısu, Seyrek and Kumcağız streams. The annual total of precipitation is 900–1000 mm. The region is densely forested. The area is 933.0 km².

history

The Byzantines gave the city the name Kentri, which has roughly the meaning of center . Kandira was conquered by Akça Koca during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Orhan I between 1308 and 1317 and incorporated into the Ottoman Empire.

Until 1868, Kandıra was a municipality in the Üsküdar district , which is now part of Istanbul. After Kandıra received county rights in 1868, it was incorporated into Kocaeli Province. During the Turkish War of Independence, it was occupied by English troops in 1918 and Greek troops in 1920. Kandira suffered attacks from Greeks, Abbazars and Circassians in the course of its history.

On the top of Babadağı is the tomb of Akçakoca Bey, the conqueror of Kocaeli. Dine with turkey meat are very popular in Kandira and known throughout the country.
