Elchowo [ ˈɛɫxovo ] (also written Elhovo , Bulgarian Елхово ) is a city in southeastern Bulgaria , in Yambol Oblast . With 9,618 inhabitants (as of December 2016), Elchowo is the second largest city in the province after Jambol and the administrative center of the municipality of the same name .

The city of Elchowo is located on the left bank of the Tundscha , in the southeastern part of the Thracian Plain between Strandscha and Sakar . It is 28 km to the city of Yambol and 27 km to Topolovgrad .

history

Already in Thracian times there was a settlement here under the name Orudiza . The Romans called the place Orudiza ad Burgum , the Slavs then Joaniza and Janiza. During the Ottoman rule, the city was named Janidschal, Enidsche Kasalagach and Kasalagach (or Kasal Agach; Bulgarian Къзъл Агач). The name Elchowo comes from the time before the liberation from the Turks (1878). According to tradition, a well-known Heiducke escaped his Turkish persecutors in the city by hiding in an alder (Bulgarian елха; Elcha) - hence the name Elchowo .

The American Peace Corps is represented in the city to carry out international programs.

Mayor since 2007

In 2007, Petar Kirov stood as a candidate for an initiative committee ( GERB , Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria , Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union - People's Union and Union of Democratic Forces ) for the mayor's office and was able to stand up in a runoff election on November 4th against Dimitar Dimitrov, candidate of the former Communists (GNP) prevail with 61.02 percent of the vote (5430 voters).

In the local elections in 2011, Petar Kirov was re-elected as Lord Mayor in a runoff election. The politician was able to win the elections in the second ballot with 59.16 percent of the vote. The runner-up Tatiana Djulgerowa, candidate of the BSP, convinced only 3550, or 40.84 percent of the voters.

City council

The city council is re-elected every four years, the next election is in 2015.
