Welko Valkanov

Welko Walkanow ( Bulgarian Велко Вълканов ; born November 16, 1927 in Elchowo ; † November 26, 2016 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian lawyer and professor of international law . In 1992 he was a presidential candidate for the left-wing socialist Balgarskata Leviza .

Life

Due to his experience in participating in the resistance against the occupation of his country by the Wehrmacht in World War II , he was one of the leading figures of the Antifascist Union of Bulgaria .

In 1992 the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) made him a non-party candidate for the presidential election, in which he was defeated by 47% of the vote against Shelju Shelev .

When the Balgarskata Leviza party was founded on April 4, 2009 by former members of the BSP, he attended the founding meeting.

Valkanov was considered a critic of the capitalist economic system, as he explained in an interview with journalist Tassilo Hardung :

“Now there is no one left to correct capitalism. Nobody forces him to compromise. What is good about capitalism, it only owes to its confrontation with Marxism. "
