Darıca

Darıca is a city and a district in the Turkish province of Kocaeli on the north bank of the Bay of İzmit on the Sea of Marmara with around 146,896 inhabitants (as of December 2010).

history

Darıca takes its name from the castle of the same name , of which only ruins remain today. The city was first in the Byzantine period as Tararion mentioned and was also Toricion or in the ancient Bithyniesine called.

In the 7th century BC The region was settled by Greeks and Phrygians . The city itself was founded in the Byzantine period (around 378 BC). From 1329 it was in the hands of the Ottomans .

After the Battle of Ankara in 1402 Darıca was ceded again to Byzantium, but was soon recaptured by Gazi Timurtaşoğlu Umurbey. He set up a foundation to administer the conquered areas. The foundation still exists today and manages land and real estate in the Darıca area.

In the turmoil of the First World War and the Turkish Liberation War 1914-21, the city was plundered several times and finally occupied on April 28, 1921 by Greek and British troops. The foreign associations withdrew on June 26, 1921.

economy

The agriculture plays in Darıca today only a minor role; cherries , olives and artichokes are grown on a small scale . Chicken and sheep are still farmed. Darıca is known for a special sheep yogurt. Traditionally, the mackerel fishery has always played a major role due to the location on the Marmara Sea in Darıca, but today the conditions are difficult due to declining fish stocks.

Due to the favorable location by the sea, tourism is an important branch of the economy.

Infrastructure

Just 10 kilometers from Darıca is the airport Sabiha Gökçen. The city also has direct access to the motorway and a ferry port .
