Derince ( Greek Βοθύλακας Vothylakas ) is a village on the Karpas Peninsula in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and is located in the İskele district of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . In 2011 the place had 488 inhabitants.

Derince is located on the Karpas peninsula, on the main road between İskele and Dipkarpaz .

history

Derince was inhabited by Greek Cypriots before the occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkish forces . In the 1960 census, 509 Greek Cypriots were counted, in 1973 there were 503. They fled after the invasion of southern Cyprus.

Today Derince, which got its name from a brand of cigarettes , is inhabited by Turkish settlers who settled in the Turkish Federal State of Cyprus from Adana , Gaziantep , Mersin and Osmaniye . In 1978 there were 493 Cypriot Turks in Derince , in 2011 there were 488.
