About this picture

The district İskele , Turkish İskele İlçesi , is one of the six districts of the internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the northeast of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus . Its main town is İskele . In 2011 the district had 22,492 inhabitants.

The area of today's district belonged to the Republic of Cyprus and its district Famagusta before 1974 , but this has no de facto control over this district. It includes the elongated Karpas peninsula , the tip of which is Cape St. Andreas (Zafer Burnu) , which is preceded by some small uninhabited islands. The peninsula is around 80 km long and around 10 km wide.
