Tschornomorsk ( Ukrainian Чорноморськ , Russian Черноморск Chernomorsk ) is a port city in Ukraine with about 60,000 inhabitants (2019).
Until 4 February 2016, the city after wearing Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (Ukrainian name Illichivsk Іллічівськ ; Russian Ильичёвск Iljitschowsk ), which in the context of de-communization in Ukraine has changed. The new name refers to the location on the Black Sea .
location
Chornomorsk is located about 20 km southwest of Odessa on the Black Sea. Within the Odessa Oblast , the city forms an independent unit ( district-free city ) and is surrounded by the Rajon Owidiopol . In addition to the city, the urban-type settlement Oleksandriwka as well as the 2 villages Burlatscha Balka and Malodolynske (formerly German Klein-Liebental ) belong to the urban district since February 21, 2002 . The latter was originally a settlement of Catholic Alsatians and belonged to the colonist district of Großliebental of the Black Sea Germans .
history
The city emerged around the port built in 1958, has had town charter since 1973 and is the seat of the traditional Black Sea shipping company " BLASCO ", which was the largest shipping company in Europe in the early 1990s. Although this has now become almost insignificant due to economic circumstances, the place developed into the city with the highest per capita income in Ukraine.
economy
A large part of the city's workforce is employed in the port and the shipping industry. The port is one of the largest in Europe . Numerous shipping companies have their headquarters in the city or operate a branch here. The largest fishing company in Ukraine, "Antarctica", is also located here.
traffic
Since 1978 there has been a rail ferry connection to Varna ( Bulgaria ). There are further routes to Poti and Batumi ( Georgia ), as well as to Derince near Istanbul . The Ukrainian international trunk road M 27 has ended in the village since 2013 .
