Bolhrad ( Ukrainian Болград ; Russian and Bulgarian Болград / Bolgrad , or Romanian in the Latin script Bolgrad ) is a city in southern Ukraine , about 176 kilometers southwest of Odessa . It is the center of the Bolhrad Rajons of the same name and is located on the north bank of the Jalpuhsee near the border with the Republic of Moldova .
It was founded in 1821 by Bulgarian refugees, belonged to the Principality of Moldova from 1856 to 1859 , then to Romania until 1878 and 1918 to 1940 and 1941 to 1944 and then to the Soviet Union until 1991 .
As in the surrounding Rajon, the population consists mainly of Bulgarians. It is also the unofficial capital of the Bulgarians in Ukraine. On July 28, 1858, they founded the famous Bolgrad grammar school "Holy Brothers Kyrill and Method" (Bulgarian Болградската гимназия "Св. Св. Кирил и Методий", Bolgradskata gimnasija, Sw. Sw. Kiril i Metodij ).
Karakurt
Long -established Albanian refugees from the 19th century who have more or less preserved their language live in the village of Karakurt , southeast of Bolhrad .
