Tatarbunary (Ukrainian Татарбунари ; Russian Татарбунары , Romanian Tatarbunar or Tatarești , Turkish Tatarpınarı ) is a city in Budschak in southern Ukraine , 33 kilometers north of the Danube Delta and about 104 kilometers southwest of Odessa . It is the center of the Tatarbunary Rajons of the same name and lies at the mouth of the Kohylnyk River in Lake Sassyk .
The place was probably created in the 16th century under the Turkish rule in this area (later the Principality of Moldova ), the name of the place means "Tatar well" (from the Turkish word "pınar" for spring or well) and was so called by the Bessarabian Bulgarians. In 1812 the place was annexed by Russia like the whole of Budschak, in the meantime it came back to the Principality of Moldova from 1854 to 1878 and became part of the Kingdom of Romania from 1918 to 1940/1944 . In 1924 the Tatarbunary uprising broke out , a pro-Soviet popular uprising initiated by the Bolsheviks . After the Hitler-Stalin Pact , the place became part of the Soviet Union , but after the attack on the Soviet Union it was occupied by Romania again until 1944, after which it belonged to the Ukrainian SSR and since 1991 to the independent Ukraine. Tatarbunary has had city status since 1978.
