Albanians in Ukraine
The Albanians in Ukraine ( Albanian Shqiptarët në Ukrainë , Ukrainian Албанці в Україні Albantsi v Ukrayini ) are an ethnic minority who mainly settled in the Zaporizhia Oblast and Budschak . They are mainly descendants of Albanian rebels who fought against the Ottomans in the Russo-Turkish wars and who were granted settlement in the Russian Empire in the 18th century . These Albanians did not come from Albania, but from Bulgaria .
Today there are four Albanian villages in the south of Ukraine: Karakurt (founded in 1811 as the first Albanian settlement) in Odessa Oblast and Hamiwka ( Гамівка , formerly Xhandran ), Diwnynske (formerly Taz ) and Heorhijiwka ( Георгіївка , formerly Tyshkiish ) in Zaporizhia Oblast .
