Albanians in the UK

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Albanians in the United Kingdom Albanian  Shqiptarët në Mbretërinë e Bashkuar , English Albanians in the United Kingdom (UK ) represent a large group of immigrants in the country with an estimated 50,000 people. Most Albanians live in London , but there are also areas in Birmingham and Oxford with a relevant Albanian population.

Most of them are migrants from the former Yugoslavia (now Kosovo ) and some from Albania . The 2011 census showed 13,295 people born in Albania and 28,390 people born in Kosovo in England as well as 120 and 56 in Wales , 196 respectively. 215 in Scotland and 55 and 44 respectively in Northern Ireland .

Only 30 Albanians are said to have lived in Great Britain around 1989; official sources speak of 338 registered Albanians in 1991. First of all, Albanians came from the educated, English-speaking elite of Kosovo. Later on, Albanian gangs smuggled in more and more members - Albanians became an internal security problem. In 1997 around 30,000 Albanians were counted. For 2008 the number of Albanians was estimated at 70,000 to 100,000.
