Since December 15, 2010, Albanian citizens can travel to Austria for tourist or business purposes up to a period of 90 days per half-year without a visa. The prerequisite is that you travel with a biometric passport. Border authorities can ask Albanian nationals to provide evidence of the financing of the stay and travel expenses as well as the purpose of the trip.

The asylum applications of Albanian citizens varied greatly in recent years and fell in one year of 68 applications (2009) to 17 (2010 and 2011). More than ten positive asylum notices per year were only issued twice during this period, the last time in 2010. There is a clear increase in negative asylum notices: from 2008 (23) to 2010 (86) there was almost a quadrupling of negative asylum notices. In 2011 there were 76. In the same year, four people received subsidiary protection .
