Albanians in Sweden

The Albanians in Sweden ( Albanian  Shqiptaret në Suedi , Swedish Albaner i Sverige ) represent a large ethnic minority in the country with a population of around 100,000. They are divided into three groups: migrants from Kosovo, Albania and North Macedonia. Most of the Albanian immigrants come from Kosovo and Albania. However, there is also a relevant minority of Albanians from North Macedonia who have emigrated to Sweden.

No precise answer can be given about the number of people of Albanian origin in Sweden. According to the Diaspora Ministry of the Republic of Kosovo, Sweden has the best conditions for the Albanian Diaspora . Sweden is exemplary when it comes to promoting native-language Albanian lessons in the country's schools. One of the three state cultural centers of the Albanian diaspora is in Sweden. It is in the Swedish province of Halmstad. According to statements by the Kosovo-Albanian Diaspora Ministry, there are around 30,000 ethnic Albanians living in the city of Malmö alone . It is estimated that 70,000 Kosovar Albanians emigrated to Sweden since the Kosovo War in 1999.

Settlement area

The Albanian immigrants in Sweden live mainly in big cities like Malmö and Gothenburg. However, a relevant Albanian minority also lives in the industrial city of Landskrona. The approximately 10,000 Albanians from North Macedonia tend to live in smaller cities. In Eslöv, Växjö and Trelleborg there are Albanians who have emigrated from North Macedonia. But there are also Slavic Macedonians who live in these cities.
