Ronald Gërçaliu (born February 12, 1986 in Tirana , Albania ) is an Austrian football player of Albanian origin.

Career

Ascent in a storm

Ronald Gërçaliu began his football career at the age of nine in the Partizani Tirana team. In 1997 he moved to Styria and joined the youth department of SK Sturm Graz . There he went through all the youth stations and rose to the Bundesliga team in the 2004/05 season .

Since then, Gërçaliu has mostly played in a nominal defensive position, and his radius of action extends far into the offensive. Especially on the left wing he develops a great dynamic in the forward movement due to his technical strength and his dribbling . However, he shows weaknesses in the accuracy of the flanks and shots on goal. On the defensive, his strengths lie in duel behavior and positional play.

The dual citizen made his debut for the Austrian national team in 2005 under the then team boss Hans Krankl . After his good performance at Sturm and in the national team, he was offered a well-paid contract by FC Red Bull Salzburg's coach Kurt Jara at the beginning of the 2005/06 season. However, the change failed due to the excessive transfer demand from Sturm Graz President Hannes Kartnig .

Establishment as a national player

Finally, a transfer fee was agreed in November 2005 and Gërçaliu moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg in winter 2005/2006, where he was never able to assert himself. So he was soon no longer considered for the national team by Josef Hickersberger . In the course of the retirement under the new Salzburg coaches Giovanni Trapattoni and Lothar Matthäus before the 2006/07 season, Gërçaliu was also advised to look for a new club. He then returned - after a transfer to Leeds United had failed - on loan to his ex-club SK Sturm Graz .

In the winter of 2006/07, Gërçaliu planned to move to Energie Cottbus , but due to a short stint at Red Bull Salzburg Amateurs, he was not allowed to move abroad , according to FIFA regulations. This means that a player is not allowed to work for three clubs internationally within one championship year. Gërçaliu then signed a contract with FK Austria Wien on January 3, 2007 , since an Austrian transfer was not affected by this regulation.

With the violets he soon won his first national title with the ÖFB-Cup and celebrated his comeback in the team against France . After Ronald Gërçaliu was able to establish himself there, he was called up on May 28, 2008 in the Austrian squad for the 2008 European Championship . For the 2008/09 season, he moved back to FC Red Bull Salzburg under contract, where he repeatedly appears under Co Adriaanse . At the end of the year the championship title was won, which is the first of his career for Gërçaliu.

At EURO 2008 he played 69 minutes in the first group match against Croatia before he was substituted for Ümit Korkmaz . He was not used in the other group games.

After becoming champions again with Salzburg in 2008/09, the defender moved to SC Magna Wiener Neustadt within the Bundesliga in summer 2009 . Since the end of 2008 he has not been nominated for the national team.

Suffering time at FC Ingolstadt 04

For the 2010/11 season he left the Austrian Bundesliga and moved to the German second division club FC Ingolstadt 04 , where he signed a two-year contract. But Gërçaliu was not the hoped-for reinforcement. Even at the beginning of the preparation he was injured and had to undergo knee surgery. This injury forced him to take an eight month hiatus. After that he could not fight his way back into the team and only came to four missions in the second team. He was told that he was no longer being planned for the next season. However, there was no club that wanted to sign him. So he stayed at FC Ingolstadt. In the first half of the 2011/12 season he only made four appearances in the second team. On February 16, 2012, the contract was then terminated by mutual agreement.

New start in Poland

On February 16, 2012 Gërçaliu then signed a contract until the end of the 2011/12 season with the Polish first division club ŁKS Łódź , after he was able to convince in a trial session. There he was used as a regular player in the first games after the winter break. However, despite good performances, he could not prevent relegation.

Back in the 2nd Bundesliga

For the 2012/13 season, second division club FC Erzgebirge Aue Gërçaliu signed. He received a two-year contract until the end of June 2014.

Change to Romania

At the beginning of January 2014, Gercalius' contract in Aue was terminated. He then moved to the Romanian League 1 to Universitatea Cluj . There he became a regular after a difficult start and made eight appearances in the second half of the season .

Return to Austria

In the summer of 2014 Gercaliu left Romania again and switched to promoted SCR Altach in the Austrian Bundesliga .
