Career as a sports official

President of the EC Graz

In 1989, Kartnig took over the presidency of the EC Graz ice hockey club . Soon afterwards, Graz had the highest budget in the league and probably also the most expensive and best squad. Nevertheless, he and the Grazers were denied the championship title , the Grazers were only able to win the runner-up title three times ( 1991/92 , 1992/93 , 1993/94 ) in a row. The Swedish start coach Claes Wallin, who was supposed to lead Graz to the championship title, dropped out after a few months due to private problems. The EC Graz went bankrupt . In 1999 a new association was formed in Graz, the Graz 99ers .

President of Sturm Graz

In 1992 Kartnig also took over the presidency of SK Sturm Graz . This makes him Austria's first double president. During Kartnig's presidency, Sturm achieved two championship titles (1997/98 and 1998/99), three cup wins and three appearances in the Champions League . In addition, the team reached the second round in the Champions League as group winners in the 2000/01 season, ahead of Galatasaray Istanbul , Glasgow Rangers and AS Monaco .

After that there were no further sporting successes and Sturm Graz had financial problems. That is why Kartnig stated in autumn 2006 that he wanted to resign as president, but stayed with the club after the designated successor Carlo Platzer withdrew his candidacy. Kartnig was re-elected as President until 2010 in April 2006, and in November 2006 he resigned after 14 years at the helm of SK Sturm Graz, despite long resistance on his part. This ultimately saved the club's survival (in contrast to the EC Graz once). On October 23, 2006, Kartnig submitted a bankruptcy and compulsory settlement application on behalf of Sturm Graz, which was positively assessed. The association was taken over by a group of investors who provided a bank guarantee in the amount of 750,000 euros and financed the compulsory settlement of around 2 million euros. The prerequisite for this was a resignation of Kartnig from all functions of the association, which Kartnig accepted on November 2, 2006. His (short-term) successor was the freight forwarder Hans Fedl .

Legal proceedings

At the same time, the public prosecutor and financial criminal authority began their investigations against Kartnig on suspicion of tax evasion , embezzlement and breach of trust, as well as fraudulent krida and grossly negligent impairment of creditors' interests . On May 7, 2007, he was arrested and on 9 July 2007 against a deposit of € 1.2m back from the detention dismissed. On September 29, 2007, the courier published a newspaper article according to which Kartnig is said to have falsified a storm balance sheet in 2005 to the effect that Sturm received the license for 2006/2007. In addition, according to media reports, Kartnig is said to have gambled away around € 2.9 million in the casino .

On February 17, 2012, he was sentenced in the first instance to five years of unconditional imprisonment and to pay a fine of 6.637 million euros for serious fraud, grossly negligent impairment of creditors' interests and tax evasion.

Kartnig appealed and appealed against this judgment. In the appeal hearing on April 23, 2014, the verdict was reduced to 15 months of unconditional imprisonment and a fine of € 5.5 million, but the procedure for fraud at the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) has to be repeated, which increases the extent of the sentence could increase. In August 2014 it was decided that Kartnig could spend the sentence in house arrest using an ankle cuff. In October Kartnig caused a stir when he attended a Tosca premiere in the Graz Opera with the ankle bracelet . Kartnig was thereupon warned by the prison authorities, in case of repetition he could face imprisonment. Only a few days later he celebrated his 63rd birthday in the restaurant of a luxury hotel in Vienna. As a result, the ankle shackles were revoked on October 29 and Kartnig himself was arrested again.

On November 12, 2014, Hannes Kartnig was sentenced to a further four years and one month in prison for fraud - this judgment is not yet final. On November 18, 2014, Kartnig was sentenced to a further seven months in prison for serious fraud in relation to the forged ticket invoices; this judgment is also not yet final.

On September 27, 2017, Kartnig was conditionally released from prison on probation, the last time he was wearing an ankle cuff .
