Granit Xhaka [ ˈʤaka ] (born September 27, 1992 in Basel ) is a Swiss football player . He is used as a central, defensive or attacking midfielder and is under contract with Arsenal FC .

In 2017, Xhaka was named Swiss Footballer of the Year .

Birth and childhood

Granit Xhaka is the son of Kosovar Albanian parents who came from Pristina , then Yugoslavia . He grew up with his older brother Taulant , who is also a professional footballer but is an Albanian national player , in the Basel district of St. Johann. At the EM 2016 , the brothers met in the international match in the group stage on June 11th.

Started at Concordia and FC Basel

When he was four years old, Xhaka was taken to training at FC Concordia Basel by his father and brother . In January 2003 he moved to the youth department of FC Basel . Three years later he played for their U-21 team. Between 2008 and 2010 he played 37 games and scored eleven goals.

From the 2010/11 season Xhaka was in the squad of the first team. He made his official game debut on July 28, 2010 in the qualifying game for the 2010/11 Champions League season against VSC Debrecen . This away game at Budapest's Szusza Ferenc Stadium was won 2-0 by FC Basel, with Granit Xhaka scoring the second goal. He scored his first goal in the Swiss football championship in the meantime 3-1 in the 5-1 home win against FC Thun on May 15, 2011.

In the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons , Xhaka became Swiss champions with FC Basel and the 2011/12 cup winners as well.

Borussia Monchengladbach

For the season 2012/13 undertook Borussia Moenchengladbach Xhaka. He signed a five-year contract until June 30, 2017. Xhaka made his debut for Gladbach on August 18, 2012, when he was in the starting eleven in the 2-0 win in the first round of the DFB Cup against Alemannia Aachen and played through. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 25, 2012, when he was used in the 2-1 win on the first match day against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim ; his first Bundesliga goal was on September 15, 2012, when he scored the equalizer for Gladbach in a 3-2 defeat on matchday three against 1. With the change of coach in September 2015, he became team captain and was able to confirm his strong performances during the season. In the summer of 2016, Xhaka moved to Arsenal for a rumored transfer fee of 45 million euros , making it Borussia's record transfer. In total, he completed 140 competitive games for the club during his time in Mönchengladbach and scored nine goals.

Arsenal FC

On May 25, 2016, Xhaka and Arsenal agreed to switch to the 2016/17 season . Xhaka signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2021. He made his Premier League debut on August 14 in a 3: 4 home defeat by Liverpool . Head coach Unai Emery appointed the Swiss in September 2019 as the new team captain to succeed Laurent Koscielny . At the beginning of November 2019, after a falling out with fans, Xhaka was removed as captain again; he was followed by his teammate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang .

National team

For the Swiss U-17 national team , he played 12 games and scored two goals. He made his debut on September 24, 2008 in a 2-1 home win in the World Cup qualifier against Iceland . With the team he was world champion at the U-17 World Cup in Nigeria in 2009 .

On June 4, 2011, he made his debut for the Swiss senior team in the European Championship qualifier against England at Wembley Stadium . He scored his first international goal in the friendly on November 15, 2011 in the 1-0 away win against Luxembourg at the Josy Barthel Stadium .

Xhaka was in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil in the squad of Switzerland , studied there until retirement in knockout round against Argentina all games and scored in the defeat in the first round against France 's only goal to the final score of 2: 5th

At the 2016 European Championships in France, he was included in the Swiss squad and started the tournament in the regular team. There he met his brother Taulant , who played for Albania , which was the first time that two brothers faced each other in a European Championship match. He played all four games over the full length of the game. In the second round against Poland he missed the penalty shootout only player his penalty; Switzerland dropped out.
