There Mustafi was retrained as a defensive midfielder and central defender , played in youth B and A and was allowed to train with Martin Jol several times in the first team.

For the 2009/10 season he was signed by the English first division club Everton for three years after Newcastle United , Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund had shown interest. Everton FC had already qualified for the round of 32 at this point, and coach David Moyes had appointed a total of eight young players from 1990 to 1993 to the professional squad for the game.

Sampdoria Genoa

Since he was unable to assert himself at Everton, he moved to the Italian second division club Sampdoria Genoa in early 2012 , with whom he signed a four and a half year contract. National team

Shkodran Mustafi began his career as a selection player in 2003 at the DFB base in Bad Hersfeld. The player, who was already very strong in duels and extraordinarily strong at the top of the ball in his e-junior age, was nominated for the first time for the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district selection by the base coach Jochen Schäfer in August 2003 . Shkodran Mustafi then also made it into the Hessen selection via the Fulda district selection with his coach Michael Schäfer . Overall, he trained and played for three years at the DFB base in Bad Hersfeld, but as a Macedonian citizen was not eligible to play in DFB selections. At the age of 15 he gave up his Macedonian citizenship and took on German citizenship .

In 2009 Mustafi was appointed to the squad for the U-17 European Championship in Germany. In the first game against the Turkish national team, he headed the goal to make it 3-1. He played all tournament games over 90 minutes and was U-17 European champion after a 2-1 win in the final against the Dutch national team. In autumn 2009 he also took part in the U-17 World Cup in Nigeria, where the team was eliminated in the round of 16. Again Mustafi was a regular player, but received in the extension of the last game a sending off .

In the following three years he also went through all other DFB national teams. On March 24, 2013 Mustafi made his debut in the U-21 national team , which defeated the Israeli selection 2-1 in Tel Aviv . In June of the same year he was part of the German squad for the U-21 European Football Championship 2013 in Israel, with which he was eliminated in the preliminary round and only played one tournament game.

On February 28, 2014, Mustafi was nominated by national coach Joachim Löw for the test international match of the senior national team against Chile , but was not used there.

On May 8, 2014, national coach Löw took him into the preliminary roster for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . He made his international debut in the senior national team on May 13, 2014 in Hamburg in the 0-0 test international match against Poland . In the nomination of the final German World Cup line-up, Mustafi was initially not considered. However, after a few days he replaced Marco Reus , who suffered a partial tear in the front syndesmosis in the international match against Armenia on June 6, 2014 and had to forego participation in the World Cup. In the first group game in the 4-0 win against Portugal , Mustafi made his second international match for the injured Mats Hummels in the 73rd minute. In the round of 16 against Algeria, he played right-back from the start, tore his right thigh and had to be replaced in the 70th minute. He was no longer used due to the injury at the World Cup; the German national team won the tournament.

Mustafi was in the squad of the national team for the European Championship 2016 . In the first group game he stood for the injured Mats Hummels in the team. In the 2-0 win against Ukraine , he scored his first international goal in his eleventh international match in the 19th minute with a header after a free kick with the goal to make it 1-0. Then Hummels returned to the team and Mustafi stayed on the bench, even in the semifinals, when Hummels was missing a yellow card. It was only when another central defender was injured in this game with Jérôme Boateng that he made his second appearance. The game ended 2-0 for hosts France and the German team was eliminated.

Joachim Löw nominated Mustafi for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia. In the tournament that the German team won, he made three appearances, including the 1-0 final victory against Chile on July 2, 2017 .

Others

Mustafi has given up the Macedonian citizenship. On July 18, 2014, Mustafi signed the city of Bebra's Golden Book .

After the end of the European Championship, Mustafi married his partner, the Albanian - Swiss model Vjosa Kaba, in Gostivar in July 2016 . The couple had a daughter in July 2017.
