Sami Khedira [ ˈsaːmi xeˈdiːra ] (born April 4, 1987 in Stuttgart ) is a German football player who also has Tunisian citizenship and is mainly used in the central defensive midfield . He was from his youth until July 2010 for the VfB Stuttgart active, with whom he 2007 German championship won, and debuted there in 2009 as a German national team before moving to the 2010 World Cup to Real Madrid moved.

Khedira celebrated his greatest successes in Madrid until 2015, winning the Copa del Rey , the Spanish championship , the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2014 . In the same year he became world champion with the national team in Brazil . Khedira has been under contract with Juventus Turin in Italy since the 2015/16 season .

Origin and education

Sami Khedira is the son of a German and a Tunisian who met in the Tunisian city of Hammamet . He grew up in Fellbach - Oeffingen with two brothers, one of whom Rani is also a professional footballer. After secondary school , Khedira began training as an industrial clerk in Winnenden . He gave up this after a year and a half after coach Rainer Adrion from the A-Junior division had accepted him into the amateur team of VfB Stuttgart .

Club career

youth

Sami Khedira, who counted the French soccer players Zinédine Zidane and Patrick Vieira among his role models, was active in the youth of TV Oeffingen in Fellbach when he was observed by talent scouts from VfB Stuttgart at a tournament in Wernau in 1995 at the age of eight and then moved to Stuttgart . He went through the youth teams of VfB Stuttgart and became German B and A youth champions as team captain . At the side of the later national players Andreas Beck and Serdar Taşçı , he played in the B-Junior Regional League. As champion of the Regionalliga Süd, Khedira took part with the team from VfB Stuttgart in the final round of the 2003 German B youth championship and lost 4-1 to Hertha BSC in the final . After repeated regional league championships, Khedira led the Swabians as team captain into the final of the German B youth championship again the following year. There you met host Energie Cottbus in front of 2,000 spectators in the Stadium of Friendship . With a 2: 1, in which Sami Khedira scored the 1-0 opening goal in the 12th minute, the Stuttgart German B youth champions were 2004 .

After moving to the club's A-Juniors, he played in the A-Juniors Bundesliga . On March 28, 2005, as an A-youth, he made his first appearance for the VfB amateur team, which was then third-class Regionalliga Süd , when he was in the starting line-up in the 2-4 defeat away at SC Pfullendorf . In the following years he also ran regularly for the A-Juniors and the regional league team. In the further course of the season Khedira had to be operated on due to knee problems on the outer meniscus, which means he was not on the field when he won the German A youth championship in 2005 . After the operation and return to the team, Khedira trained for the first time with the club's professionals under Stuttgart coach Trapattoni . However, when the knee complaints soon returned, another operation and three-month rehabilitation in Donaustauf was necessary, which meant that he was unable to complete the second half of the 2005/06 season. The doctors advised Khedira to quit competitive sport, but in the doctors Müller-Wohlfahrt and Boenisch he found two doctors who helped him to overcome his injury.

VfB Stuttgart

For the 2006/07 season , Khedira, who has now finally outgrown the juniors, played a pain-free preparation for the season with the VfB second team, which was supervised by amateur trainer Rainer Adrion . In the first nine games of the season in the Regionalliga Süd , he was used for 90 minutes and also scored a goal in the 4-1 away win against 1860 Munich II . After six wins and three draws, the VfB reserve were at the top of the table at the end of September, and Sami Khedira was appointed to the Swabian professional squad due to his convincing performance from coach Armin Veh . He made his Bundesliga debut on October 1, 2006 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium . Khedira was substituted on in the 2-2 draw against Hertha BSC in stoppage time and remained without ball contact as referee Kinhöfer ended the game a short time later. Just a week later, the then 19-year-old was in the starting line-up for the game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Stuttgart's Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion , which VfB won 3-0 and thus made their first home win of the season perfect. From then on, Khedira played regularly. He scored his first two Bundesliga goals on October 29, 2006 in the game against FC Schalke 04 .

On January 29, 2007 he signed his first professional contract with VfB, which tied him to the club until the summer of 2009. On May 19, 2007, the last game day of the season, he headed the decisive 2-1 winning goal against Energie Cottbus , which made winning the German championship perfect for VfB Stuttgart. On July 9, 2008, Khedira extended his contract with VfB until June 2011.

On December 13, 2008 he scored a goal in stoppage time against FC Bayern Munich and thus thwarted the Munich autumn championship. This hit was voted Goal of the Month in December 2008.

real Madrid

After the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Real Madrid became aware of Khedira with José Mourinho, who was newly signed up at the beginning of the 2010/11 season , along with other European clubs . On July 30, 2010, he moved to the Spanish club and signed a five-year contract.

He made his debut for his new club on August 13, 2010 against FC Bayern Munich in a friendly. He played his first competitive game for Real Madrid on August 29, 2010 (1st matchday) in a goalless draw in the away game against RCD Mallorca , when he came on for Álvaro Arbeloa in the 70th minute . Khedira scored his first goal for Real Madrid on October 18, 2011 in the Champions League group game against Olympique Lyon . On March 4, 2012, he met in a 5-0 win against Espanyol Barcelona for the first time in a game of the Primera División . To the surprise of the professional world, Khedira quickly established himself as a regular player among the Madrilenians, who acted as a defensive “midfield clearer” alongside playmaker Xabi Alonso . He was on the squad in all 19 first round games in the league, 15 of them on the starting line-up. In the second half of the season, however, there were only a few more appearances, as he was out twice for some time due to muscle injuries. But he was there on April 20, 2011 when Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey in the final against FC Barcelona . He was in action from the start until he was substituted right after the decisive 1-0 opening goal in the 104th minute of the game.

In his second year in Madrid, Khedira was only used on the fourth match day and received his first expulsion ( yellow-red ) in the game . From the ninth game day he was back in the regular team and then played almost all games until the end of the season, with the exception of a short break after a ligament stretch. On April 21, 2012 he scored the first goal of the game in a 2-1 away win in Clásico against FC Barcelona at Camp Nou . With this victory, Madrid's lead on runners-up from Barcelona in the 2011/12 Primera División increased to seven points with four games left. In the following two games, Khedira and Real held this lead, making Sami Khedira Spanish champions for the first time with Madrid. Khedira and Real broke the Primera División's point record with 100 points at the end of the season. As in the previous year, he was used eight times in the Champions League before Real was eliminated again in the semifinals.

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season Khedira won the Supercopa de España with Real Madrid against FC Barcelona and was in action for the Spanish champions over the full distance in both games against the cup winners. In the league, he was not used in the first two games, but then he played up to the 29th matchday always, apart from four games that he could not play due to a hamstring . At the end of the season, Khedira was not in the squad four times and was also suspended on one matchday. In the Copa del Rey , Khedira made six appearances, including in the final against Atlético Madrid , which Real Madrid lost 2-1 afterwards. In the Champions League , Khedira was only not used during his injury, otherwise he always played until the semi-final defeat against Borussia Dortmund .

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, Khedira made eleven league appearances and four appearances in the Champions League before tearing a cruciate ligament , after which he had to pause for almost half a year. As a result, he could not play in 21 league games, 8 Champions League games and the entire Spanish Cup , which Real Madrid won without him. After his injury, he was back in the squad for the first time on May 4, 2014, on matchday 36 against Valencia , and on matchday 37 against Celta de Vigo again in the starting line-up. Also in the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final against Atletico Madrid Khedira was in the starting and was substituted after 59 minutes.

The 2014/15 season began for Khedira with an injury. After two league games, he pulled a muscle bundle and had to take a break of almost two months. After his comeback in the Champions League against Liverpool , he played two league games and two cup games before he had to take another break due to a back injury. After recovering from this injury, he injured himself again. This time he had to take a break for about two weeks because of a concussion . He then played in nine games in different competitions until the turn of the year 2014/15, but injured himself again in the new year.

Due to a muscle injury, he was unable to start the season in Italy. Khedira played his first competitive game for Juventus on September 30, 2015 in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League against Sevilla FC . Four days later he prepared the equalizer on his Serie A debut against FC Bologna and scored the goal to make it 3-1. At the end of the season he was Italian champion with Juventus.

His contract with Juventus runs until 2021.

National team

Khedira played a total of 30 international matches for various German junior national teams . After he had only become a U-21 national player a few months earlier, he was invited to the German national team for the first time on August 16, 2007 . However, he canceled his participation in the friendly against England on August 22, 2007 because a few days earlier he had suffered a torn ligament on his right foot in a Bundesliga match against Hertha BSC .

With the U21 he qualified the following year for the Under-21 European Championship 2009 in Sweden . He scored three goals in one game against the U21s from Luxembourg. In the tournament, Khedira was the captain of the team trained by Horst Hrubesch . He played in four of the five games at the European Championship, including in the 4-0 final win against England, with which Germany won the title.

On September 5, 2009 Khedira made his senior team debut against South Africa (2-0) when he came on for Simon Rolfes in the 73rd minute .

At the 2010 World Cup he played after Michael Ballack's injury-related failure in the 4-2-3-1 system together with Bastian Schweinsteiger in the defensive midfield of the national team. On July 10, 2010 in the game for 3rd place against Uruguay , Khedira scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute with his first international goal to make it 3-2. He completed all seven world championship games.

After the World Cup, Khedira stayed in the German team and played between September 2010 and October 2011 in eight of the ten qualifying games for the 2012 European Football Championship , all of which were won. He was in the starting line- up in the German EM squad and again formed the double six in defensive midfield with Bastian Schweinsteiger in all five tournament games. In the quarter-finals, he brought the German team back into the lead with his goal to 2-1 after the Greek equalizer. After this tournament, he was elected to the UEFA All-Star Team for the Euro 2012.

During a test match against Italy on November 15, 2013, Khedira injured herself in the course of a self-committed foul . He suffered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament and the inner ligament , so that he did not play a competitive game again until May 2014.

On May 8, 2014, Khedira was appointed to the squad of the 2014 World Cup by national coach Joachim Loew despite his long injury . In the second group game against Ghana he suffered a knee ligament strain, because of which he paused in the final game of Group G against the USA. In the 7-1 semi-final win against Brazil , Khedira scored the 5-0 goal in the 29th minute of the game, after preparing the 4-0. After he was already registered for the official starting line-up, Khedira injured himself warming up before the World Cup final against Argentina , which the German team won 1-0 after extra time.

Khedira is the tenth player to win the World Cup and Champions League in the same year and, after Roberto Carlos in 2002, the second player to also win the FIFA Club World Cup or the previous World Cup competition in the same year .

He was in the national team for the 2016 European Football Championship . Until the quarter-finals, he was on the starting line-up in all games. In the game against Italy he was replaced after a quarter of an hour injured. He missed the semi-finals against hosts France, which were lost 2-0.

In the 2018 World Cup Khedira came after a weak performance in the 0: 1 defeat against Mexico 1 win over: the 2 Sweden not used. In the third group game against South Korea (0: 2), in which it was a question of making it to the round of 16, Khedira came back and was substituted in the 58th minute by Mario Gómez .

After the early elimination of the German national team in the preliminary round, Khedira was self-critical of his performance in a picture interview: "My personal performance is still inexplicable to me today." In the game against Sweden he was "right on the bench." . "He also said:" My teammates and I are being criticized so harshly, and rightly so. "In addition, Khedira apologized to the fans for the premature elimination at the World Cup (" A moment when I just want to say 'Sorry'. " )

Khedira also said that the issue of the scandal surrounding the Turkish national players Mesut Özil and Ilkay Gündoğan , who met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in May before the World Cup and took a photo with him, had been "underestimated". The topic was “not calm”.

On August 29, 2018, national coach Joachim Löw announced in a press conference on the national team's World Cup that he would no longer nominate Khedira in the future. Loew had already informed Khedira of this in a phone call. He had previously stated that he was “responsible” for the departure.
