Benedikt "Benni" Höwedes (born February 29, 1988 in Haltern ) is a former German soccer player who played for FC Schalke 04 for 16 years and was most recently under contract with Lokomotiv Moscow from 2018 to 2020 . In 2014 Höwedes became world champion with the national team in Brazil .

The defensive man played mainly in central defense, but was also used as a right full-back. Höwedes was considered a very strong defender with headers and tackles.

Origin and school education

Benedikt Höwedes grew up with two siblings. His father worked as a youth coach and later as an assistant coach for the regional league team at TuS Haltern . Parallel to his professional career, he passed his Abitur in 2008 .

Club career

Beginnings

Höwedes began playing football in the youth of his home club TuS Haltern , where Christoph Metzelder and Sérgio Pinto also played. From 1994 to 2000, almost six years, he was a member of the club. In 2000 he went to SG Herten-Langenbochum. Through this station he came to FC Schalke 04 in 2001.

FC Schalke 04

At Schalke , he became the captain of the U-19 team in 2005, with which he became the German A youth champion in 2006 under coach Norbert Elgert . On January 19, 2007, he signed his first professional contract. Until October 2007, however, he was only used in the squire's upper league team .

His first appearance as a professional was in the Champions League on October 3, 2007 , without having played in the Bundesliga beforehand. He was part of the Schalke starting XI against Rosenborg Trondheim due to an injury to Christian Pander . Three days later he made his Bundesliga debut against Karlsruher SC . Overall, Höwedes made six appearances in the Bundesliga and three in the Champions League in the 2007/08 season .

He scored his first Bundesliga goal on the 8th matchday of the 2008/09 season to make it 1-1 in an away game at Hamburger SV . In December 2008, FC Schalke 04 and Höwedes extended their contract until 2014. On matchday 19 against Werder Bremen , he scored the important 1-0 winning goal. In the second half of the 2008/09 season he became a regular player, mostly he was used in central defense. Due to injuries to other players, however, he was also occasionally placed on the full-defense positions.

In the 2009/10 season he was on the field in 33 games and also acted more often in defensive midfield. During the season he was able to prepare a goal and score three goals himself. In the German Cup , he was also able to achieve three goals, yet you resigned unhappy in the semi-final against Bayern Munich out of the competition.

With Schalke 04 he reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2010/11 season after victories against FC Valencia and defending champion Inter Milan - he scored the 2-1 winning goal in the quarter-final second leg against Inter Milan - and also won the DFB Cup - where he could also score a goal in the final. Before that, he prepared the decisive 1-0 through Raúl in the semi-final against Bayern Munich with his head, so that the revenge for the defeat last year was successful.

Höwedes in summer 2011

In the 2011/12 season Höwedes became team captain of FC Schalke 04. In March 2013, he extended his contract, which originally expired in 2014, until June 30, 2017. Right at the beginning of the season, he was able to accept the Supercup as the successor to Manuel Neuer, who had moved to Bayern Munich . With the DFB Cup victory, Höwedes played for the first time in the 2009 newly founded UEFA Europa League ; they were only eliminated in the quarterfinals against Athletic Bilbao . Höwedes missed both the eighth and quarter-finals because of a torn knee ligament and later a torn muscle. In the league he only made 22 appearances. Nevertheless, he was in the squad of the German national soccer team for the EM in Poland and Ukraine .

In the 2012/13 season he went goalless in the league for the first time, but was able to score twice in the Champions League, but he was eliminated in the round of 16 - as well as in the DFB Cup . He only missed the first two games in the league. He then played all 32 games over the full distance.

In terms of team success, the 2013/14 Bundesliga was similar to that of the previous year: They were eliminated in both the DFB Cup and the Champions League in the round of 16. Höwedes suffered several injuries in the second half of the season, so that he could only play five Bundesliga games in the second half. Nevertheless, he made it into the squad of the German national football team and became world champion in Brazil in 2014 as a regular on the left full-back position.

After the tournament he was awarded a longer vacation and missed almost all of the preparation for the 2014/15 season . In the first game of the DFB Cup he was therefore not in the squad and had to watch how his favorite team lost 2-1 to Dynamo Dresden . At the start of the Bundesliga at Hannover 96 he was back in the starting line-up, but could not prevent the 1: 2 defeat. In the first home game, Höwedes secured a 1-1 draw against defending champions Bayern Munich. Since he scored the goal with handball , the goal was a topic in various media for a long time. In the second leg against Bayern he also scored the final 1-1, this time with a regular header. On October 25, 2015, he played his 200th Bundesliga game for Schalke 04 in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach . On November 20, 2016, Höwedes was in the starting line-up and won his 100th Bundesliga game with FC Schalke 04 against VfL Wolfsburg only eight other players in club history made it.

Juventus Turin

After the new coach Domenico Tedesco Höwedes had deposed as team captain and he was not used in the first two Bundesliga games, he switched on August 30, 2017, initially for a loan fee of three million euros on loan until the end of the 2017 season / 18 in the Italian Serie A for Juventus Turin . From 25 competitive matches, Juventus Turin was obliged to acquire the transfer rights to Höwedes for 13 million euros. Due to a thigh strain, he only played his first Serie A league game on November 26, 2017 in a 3-0 home win against FC Crotone . He then tore a muscle fiber. He celebrated his comeback on matchday 32 with a 3-0 home win against Sampdoria Genoa , where he scored his first goal for Juventus. Overall, Höwedes came to three league appearances in which he scored a goal. With Juventus Turin he was Italian champion and cup winner . Juventus Turin did not use the purchase option, so Höwedes left the club when the loan contract expired.

Höwedes was then released from FC Schalke 04 to look for a new club. On July 19, 2018, he returned to team training. On July 31, 2018, Höwedes finally switched to the Russian master locomotive Moscow , with whom he signed a contract with a term until June 30, 2022. The transfer fee should have been around 5 million euros. On October 7, 2018, he scored his first goal in the 88th minute in a 1-0 derby win over CSKA Moscow . In May 2019 Höwedes won the Russian Cup after a 1-0 final win against Ural Oblast Sverdlovsk with Lokomotive . He himself was not used due to a muscular injury. He was also not in the squad for the Supercup victory, which he won with his club in July 2019. The contract was terminated on June 8, 2020. Höwedes ended his active career at the end of July 2020.

National team

For Germany he played in the U18 and U19 national teams. He was part of the German squad at the U19 European Championship in 2007 and was used in all games. On September 5, 2007 he made his first game in the U20.

In September 2007 he received the Fritz Walter Gold Medal from the DFB as the best player of the 2006/07 season of his age group .

Höwedes played for the German U21s from 2007 to 2010 . With this he qualified for the relegation games to the European Championship 2009 : He met France with the German team . After the first leg had ended 1-1, Höwedes scored the 1-0 winning goal in stoppage time of the second leg and thus bought the ticket for the European Championship in Sweden, where the team under national coach Horst Hrubesch and regular Höwedes became European champions. At the tournament, Höwedes scored the first tournament goal for the German team in a 2-0 win against Finland, with the meanwhile 1-0.

After Sven Bender and Bastian Schweinsteiger canceled , national coach Joachim Löw Höwedes called for the first time in the German senior national team for the friendly match against Uruguay in May 2011 and for the qualifying matches for the EM 2012 against Austria and Azerbaijan . He made his first appearance on May 29 against Uruguay when he came on for Philipp Lahm in the 66th minute . Since then he has been a regular member of the national team, including at the EM 2012 , where he was not used. On August 15, 2012, Höwedes scored his first international goal with a diving header in the 3-1 defeat in the test match in Frankfurt am Main against Argentina and was the second oldest outfield player at the age of 24 after the substitution of Sami Khedira .

Höwedes was appointed to the DFB squad for the 2014 World Cup by national coach Löw . In the last test match before the World Cup, he made it 3-1 in the 6-1 win against Armenia . In the first group game against Portugal , Höwedes was surprisingly used as a left full-back. The waiver of more offensive full-backs in favor of defensive specialists ( Jérôme Boateng played on the right) should strengthen the defense against the strong Portuguese. The game ended with a 4-0 victory for the German national soccer team. Ultimately, Höwedes completed all seven world championship matches as a left full-back, where he was used for the full game. In the group game against Ghana he prepared the 2-2 for Miroslav Klose with his head. Höwedes was part of the team that defeated World Cup hosts Brazil 7-1 in the semi-finals . After beating Argentina 1-0 in the final, Höwedes is one of ten field players in DFB history who became world champions without missing a single minute in the tournament. After the tournament, Höwedes' performance in a rather unusual position was praised by Franz Beckenbauer .

Benedikt Höwedes was part of the national team for the 2016 European Football Championship . In the first two games of the group stage, in the 2-0 win over Ukraine and the 0-0 draw against Poland , he was used for the full playing time as the right full-back. To make the game of the German team more offensive, Joshua Kimmich was used in the right-back position against Northern Ireland . In fact, Germany created more chances to score and won the game 1-0. Höwedes came on in the 76th minute of the game for the ailing Jérôme Boateng. After the game he had words of praise for Kimmich and said he had played great . In the 3-0 win against Slovakia , Höwedes came on again for Boateng in the 72nd minute. In the quarter-finals against Italy , national coach Löw switched the defense to a chain of three. Höwedes played together with Mats Hummels and Boateng for the full playing time and extra time. In the subsequent penalty shoot-out, Höwedes, together with Manuel Neuer, was the only German who did not need to shoot a penalty, as Jonas Hector converted the decisive penalty as the shooter in front of him. Overall, he was the only German player who did not have to actively participate in the penalty shoot-out. In the semifinals against France he replaced the yellow-banned Hummels and acted in central defense for the full season. A rescue operation by Höwedes in the 42nd minute with a “monster tackle” against Olivier Giroud was remarkable . The German team lost to the hosts 0-2. During the tournament, Löw praised Höwedes several times for his defensive versatility at a high level.

Due to various injuries, he only made three appearances in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia after the EM semifinals . Höwedes played his last international match on March 26, 2017 in a 4-1 win against Azerbaijan . Due to injuries and the resulting lack of match practice, but also because of strong competitors such as Antonio Rüdiger , Niklas Süle , Jonathan Tah or Matthias Ginter , Höwedes was not nominated for the German national team for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and was subsequently not appointed .

Style of play

Höwedes was considered a defensive all-rounder, so he could basically be used anywhere on the defensive. His regular position was that of the central defender, but he could also play as a right full-back, where he was mainly used under national coach Löw. During the 2014 World Cup, he unexpectedly played the entire tournament on the left. Even at the beginning of his professional career, he had mainly played as a left full-back, as the regular left full-backs Christian Pander and Lewan Kobiaschwili were injured more often. In the early stages of his career, he also played in defensive midfield .

National team colleague Thomas Müller once said about Höwedes that his offensive power cannot be compared to Brazil's Marcelo , but he doesn't know of a full-back who is stronger in one-on-one duels.

Höwedes' strengths lie in the duel, in the header game and his straightforward style of play. Thanks to his enormous jumping ability, he has already scored or prepared many goals with his head or thwarted opposing chances. He is considered a “modern defender” because he also knows how to “open the game with the first pass”. Höwedes has a solid basic speed and a good understanding of the game and shone with flying headers .

Remarkable

As a member of the Weitblick initiative, Höwedes is committed to ensuring fair access to educational institutions worldwide.

Since February 2013, Höwedes has been active as the “Ambassador of German Cancer Aid ” in the nationwide long-term campaign “With all his might against smoking”.

Höwedes is a representative of the Bundesliga on the players' council of the association of contract football players .

On June 26, 2015, Höwedes married his long-time girlfriend. At the time of his loan to Juventus Turin , when he was injured several times, Höwedes switched his diet to vegan .
