1Due to the non-granted license for MSV Duisburg and the subsequent objection by the club, there was a mixed lot with MSV Duisburg and FC Erzgebirge Aue in both pots for the first round of the cup .
2 Dynamo Dresden was excluded from the competition after a sports court ruling on December 10, 2012 because of repeated spectator riots. On March 7, 2013, the Dresden's objection was rejected by the DFB Federal Court. On May 14, 2013 Dynamo's lawsuit against the expulsion was dismissed by the permanent neutral arbitration tribunal. The club had already been excluded from the competition for 2012/13 because of spectator riots by the sports court, but was successfully appealed at that time.
3The three state associations with the most men's teams in play, Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Westphalia, have two starting places. In addition to the cup winners, either the defeated cup finalists (Lower Saxony and Westphalia) or the best amateur team from the Regionalliga Bayern take part.
4thSince Karlsruher SC had already qualified through the 3rd division, FC Nöttingen took part as the defeated cup finalist.
5The Lower Saxony cup finalist VfL Osnabrück had already qualified through the third division. The second amateur representative from Lower Saxony was determined in a playoff between the losing semi-finalists of the NFV Cup.
6thSince Arminia Bielefeld was already qualified in the 3rd league, SV Lippstadt 08 took part as a defeated cup semi-finalist.
7thDue to the exclusion of Dynamo Dresden, the defeated cup finalist of the regional association with the fourth most men's teams moved up. According to the 2013 DFB membership statistics, this was the Neckarsulmer Sport Union from Württemberg.

1st main round

The draw for the first main round took place on June 15, 2013 as part of the sports show . The 64 teams were divided into two lottery pots with 32 teams each according to the DFB Cup regulations . In one pot were the lower-class teams that

  • had qualified for the DFB-Pokal through the regional associations (25),
  • had occupied the last places in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2012/13 season (3 of 4; Dynamo Dresden was excluded),
  • had occupied the first four places in the 3rd division in the 2012/13 season (4).

Each of these 32 teams was drawn to a team from the other lottery pool, which included all 18 teams from the 1st Bundesliga and the 14 highest-placed teams from the 2nd Bundesliga from the 2012/13 season. The home right belonged to the teams of the first named pot. A special feature was the MSV Duisburg , who shared a ball with FC Erzgebirge Aue in every lottery pot, as at the time of the draw no decision had yet been made about the league membership of MSV Duisburg.

Former German national player Nia Künzer played the following matches between August 2nd and 5th, 2013 under the supervision of DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach (the league level in which the club is playing is given in brackets):
