Sokratis , whose full name is Sokratis Papastathopoulos [ soˈkratis papastaˈθopulos ], ( Greek Σωκράτης Παπασταθόπουλος ; born June 9, 1988 in Kalamata ) is a Greek football player who is under contract with Arsenal FC .
Career
society
Sokratis began his career with Apollon Petalidiou , from where he moved to AEK Athens in 2005 . In 2008 he became the youngest team captain in the club's history. He had previously been loaned out to Niki Volou from the second division to gain match practice.
From the 2008/09 season , the central defender played for the Italian first division club CFC Genoa , where he made the jump into the starting eleven.
On July 20, 2010, Sokratis was bought by AC Milan . In return, CFC Genoa got the players Nnamdi Oduamadi, Rodney Strasser and Gianmarco Zigoni in the form of the so-called “comproprietà” (co-ownership).
For the 2011/12 season, Sokratis initially returned to CFC Genoa, until in July 2011 he initially switched to SV Werder Bremen on loan . He wore the shirt number 22 at Werder. Due to the length and the difficult pronunciation of his surname, his first name is on the shirt. He played his first competitive game for Werder on July 30, 2011 in a 2-1 draw against 1. FC Heidenheim in the DFB Cup . A week later he was also used on the first Bundesliga matchday when Bremen beat 1. FC Kaiserslautern 2-0. At the beginning of September 2011, SV Werder had the player's name registered with the DFL shortened to his first name as the “artist name”, so that he has been called Sokratis ever since . Sokratis was firmly committed to the 2012/13 season .
As early as the 2013/14 season , Sokratis moved within the league to Borussia Dortmund , where he wore the shirt number 25. He signed a contract until June 30, 2018, which he extended early to June 30, 2019 in October 2015. He scored his first goal in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund on matchday 11 in a 6-1 win against VfB Stuttgart , making it 1-1.
For the 2018/19 season, Sokratis moved to the English Premier League for Arsenal FC for 16 million euros and signed a long-term contract.
National team
Sokratis was the captain of the Greek U-19 national team , with which he was runner- up in the U-19 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland in 2007 , but missed the final against Spain due to a yellow card suspension. Because of their achievements, he and two other teammates ( Sotirios Ninis and Konstantinos Mitroglou ) were selected among the eleven best players of the tournament at the U-19 European Championship. He also played for Greece's U-21 team.
In the senior national team, he made his debut in a friendly against the Czech Republic in early 2008, but was not called up for the 2008 European Football Championship in the same year , although he was part of the 24-player expanded squad. After the tournament, Sokratis was regularly appointed to the national team by German coach Otto Rehhagel. At the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, he was in the squad and came on two missions. In the game against Argentina he showed a highly regarded performance by effectively eliminating Lionel Messi .
