Sotirios Ninis ( Greek Σωτήριος Νίνης , born April 3, 1990 in Himara , Albania ) is a Greek football player . He plays in attacking and right midfield.
Career
Sotirios Ninis began his football career with the youth teams of Apollon Athens where he played until 2003. After moving to the youth academies of Panathinaikos Athens , he received his first professional contract in December 2006 and moved to the squad of the men's team, where he made his debut on January 7, 2007 at the age of 16 against AO Aigaleo Athens . Ninis became one of the youngest players ever to be used in the first Greek league .
On January 27, 2007, Ninis scored his first league goal in the 2-0 win over Panionios Athens , making it the youngest scorer in the history of Panathinaikos and the top Greek league since they received professional status in 1979. A few weeks later, Ninis also became the youngest player to ever appear for a Greek team in a European Cup match when he came on as a substitute for Panathinaikos on 15 February 2007 in the UEFA Cup match at RC Lens . On December 17, 2007, Ninis was named "Greek Young Player of the Year 2007".
In 2012 Ninis moved to Italy for FC Parma . There, he completed 14 games in Serie A . In the summer of 2013 he returned to Greece , on loan to PAOK Saloniki . He made twelve games that year. After the contract at Parma was terminated, his ex-club Panionios Athens took him on again three months later . In his second time there he made 22 games. At the end of January 2016, Ninis went to Belgium for the Jupiler Pro League . There he played first for Sporting Charleroi and then for KV Mechelen . He made a total of 19 games in the Belgian first division in which he could score two goals. In 2017, the Greeks finally ended up in Israel in the Liga Leumit , the Israeli second division. There he stayed with Hapoel Ashkelon . In between, his contract was canceled once. After three months, however, the club took him back on. In July 2019, however, his contract expired. It was also not extended and so Ninis was henceforth without a club.
National team
Juniors
Ninis made his debut in the Greek U21 national team on March 27, 2007 in a 2-1 win over Denmark . As a regular player of the U-19s, Ninis qualified for the 2007 European Championship in Austria , where he was able to achieve second place with Greece. On the way to the final Ninis scored the interim 1: 1 equalization in the semi-finals against Germany and prepared the remaining four tournament goals for Greece. From the UEFA Ninis was, who was the youngest participant in the U-19 World Cup, also voted one of the eleven best players of the tournament. A year later, Ninis also took part in the U-19 European Championship in 2008 .
Men's
On May 19, 2008 Ninis debuted for the first time in the men's national team of Greece . In the 2-0 win over Cyprus , Ninis scored the 1-0 opening goal after just five minutes, making him the youngest player to score in an international match for Greece.
In 2010 he was nominated by the Greek national coach Otto Rehhagel in the 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa and consequently took part in his first major tournament. When he played in the group game against Nigeria on June 17, 2010, he became the youngest player to ever play a World Cup for Greece.
Special
Sotirios Ninis was once very much in the "hype", as stated in Goal.com. After all, he was the best junior player and had decided the Athens derby (and that at sixteen). In addition, at the age of 17, Ninis decided the semi-finals of the U-19 European Football Championship in 2007 against the Germans . In the end, his team almost won the title.

- On March 2, 2007, the TBM (tunnel boring machine) for the construction of Line 2 of the Athens Metro was christened “Sotirios Ninis” by the Greek Minister Georgios Souflias.
