The 24th U-19 European Championship took place from July 14th to 26th, 2008 in the Czech Republic . The defending champion was Spain , which defeated Greece 1-0 in the 2007 final. In contrast to Austria and Switzerland, Germany qualified for the finals. It won the tournament 3-1 over Italy and was the first time since 1992 to win a junior tournament. The top scorer of the tournament was the Czech Tomáš Necid . The Germans Lars Bender and Sven Bender were honored as the golden players of the tournament.
mode
Apart from the automatically qualified host Czech Republic, all 52 European associations took part in the qualification for the final round. The first qualifying round was played in 13 groups of four, with one association from each group hosting a tournament in which each team competed once against each other in the group. The two best placed in each group and the two best third in the group qualified for the second qualifying round ("elite round"), which was played in seven groups of four in the same mode. The group winners reached the finals alongside the Czech Republic.
The final round in the Czech Republic was played in two groups of four teams each. The first two in the group contested the semi-finals, the semi-final winners reached the final. In addition to the semi-finalists, the two group thirds also qualified for the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009 .
