In the following season he had to leave Jesús the right of way for long stretches before he could conquer the position of the goalkeeper in March 2011. He made his debut in Real Madrid's first squad on May 10, 2011 in a league game against Getafe FC . In the 2011/12 season he was promoted to the Segunda División with Real Madrid Castilla , he himself played 17 games and again had to share his regular place with his teammate Jesús.

This did not change in the 2012/13 season , Mejías was in goal 26 times and his team ended up in eighth place in the table. In the following year, however, Fernando Pacheco took over the position of the goalkeeper of Real Madrid Castilla and Tomás Mejías moved in January 2014 on loan to the English second division FC Middlesbrough until the end of the season .
