Ryan Collin Shotton (born October 30, 1988 in Fenton ) is an English football player who is currently under contract with the English second division club Middlesbrough .

Career

In his youth, Shotton joined Stoke City due to its proximity to his hometown of Fenton. At Stoke he went through all youth teams and signed his first professional contract in 2007. For the 2007/08 season Shotton was loaned to FC Altrincham to get match practice . At Altrincham, he was first used as a central defender and later as a right full-back. At the end of the year he was named “Player of the Year”. After his loan, Shotton played his first competitive game for Stoke in the League Cup against Cheltenham Town on August 26, 2008 when he was substituted on in the 89 minute. Three days later it was awarded to the Tranmere Rovers for a month . In the Football League Trophy on September 2, he played his first competitive game against Accrington Stanley . The loan, which was originally limited to a month, was finally extended until the end of the season. Against Huddersfield Town he was able to score his first two goals for the Rovers in a 2-1 win. On September 23, 2009 Shotton was loaned for another season, this time, to Barnsley FC. Here, too, he quickly became a regular player and played 30 games in the league. On September 10, 2010 Shotton extended his contract with Stoke by two years until 2013. In December, he sat for the first time in the league against Wigan Athletic on the bench, but was not used. In the FA Cup against Cardiff City 9 January 2011 Shotton played over 90 minutes. On April 30, 2011 Shotton made his league debut, in a 0-0 draw against Blackpool . In the Europa League he scored his first goal in an international competition against HNK Hajduk Split . On August 28, 2011 he scored his first league goal for Stoke when he scored the 1-0 winner against West Bromwich Albion in the 89th minute .
