Dael Jonathan Fry (born August 30, 1997 in Middlesbrough ) is an English football player who is under contract with the second division club Middlesbrough FC . The central defender is a former England junior international.

Career

Dael Fry, who was born in Middlesbrough , started playing football with the local Cleveland Juniors , where he was discovered by scouts from Middlesbrough FC at the age of seven and brought to their youth academy. In Boro's offspring , he developed into one of the most talented central defenders in the club and in October 2014 he signed his first professional contract. In this 2014/15 season he played for the first time for the reserve team in the Premier League 2. On August 9, 2015 (1st matchday), he made his debut at the age of 17 in the 0-0 draw against Preston North End in the second-highest English division . Following the game, he received the Man of the Match Award. On September 14, 2015, Fry signed a new five-year contract. However, he was only used in the reserve team in the next few months. It wasn't until the spring of 2016 that he came back to play as a substitute for the injured Daniel Ayala and managed to convince in these league games. He played a total of seven league games in this 2015/16 season and was promoted to the Premier League with the first team .

On August 31, 2016, Fry signed a new five-year contract with Boro and on the same day switched to Rotherham United in a loan deal for the entire 2016/17 season . He made his debut on September 10, 2016 (6th matchday) in a 2-2 draw against Bristol City . He always started in the next league games, but fell out of the first team in November 2016 due to a series of wins by the Millers . Until the turn of the year he was no longer used, which is why the loan deal with the bottom of the table was terminated prematurely on January 4, 2017 and he returned to Middlesbrough FC after 10 league appearances. For the club itself in the relegation battle, he was not used in the remaining season in the Premier League, but only played two FA Cup games . With Middlesbrough he finally had to start relegation to the championship as penultimate. The following season 2017/18 he began alongside captain Ben Gibson as a core player in central defense. He was pushed out of the starting line-up in October 2017 and only played three more league games in the remaining season. In the next 2018/19 season , he finally rose to become a regular player and played 34 league games. He retained this status in the following season 2019/20 . In February 2020, Fry suffered a thigh injury and therefore had to take a break for several weeks, but only missed five league games due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the premature termination of the league championship.

National team

In January 2014, Dael Fry was first used for the English U17 national team and took part with this selection at the U17 European Championship 2014 in Malta . In this tournament he was used in two games. In the final victory against the Netherlands , he was not taken into account. In total, he played eight international matches for the U17s.

From September 2014 to June 2015 he played five games for the U18s . In September of the same year he played for the U19 for the first time . In July 2016 he was called up to the England squad for the 2016 European Under-19 Championship in Germany . There he was used in a game and was eliminated with the U19s in the semi-finals. In this age group he made 10 international matches.

In September 2016 he was used for the first time for the U20 . In May 2017 he took part with this selection at the U20 World Cup 2017 in South Korea and became world champion with the Three Lions . Following this competition, he was no longer considered after 10 missions.

In the summer of 2018 he took the U21 at the tournament of Toulon and won with this selection competition. Between September 2017 and March 2019, he played eleven international matches for the U21s, in which he scored two goals.
