The EFL Championship 2019/20 was the 16th season of the English EFL Championship and at the same time the 28th season of the top division of the English Football League - after the introduction of the Premier League - as only the second highest English league. The season began on August 2, 2019 with the game Luton Town against Middlesbrough FC and was originally supposed to end on May 25, 2020 with the final of the promotion play-offs; Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, game operations were interrupted in March and only resumed on June 20, the regular round ended on June 22, the final of the promotion play-offs now took place on August 4, 2020.
Teams
A total of 24 teams play in the English second division, including 18 from the 2018/19 season . As a climber from the EFL League One 2018/19 came Luton Town , the Barnsley FC and Charlton Athletic to do so. The three relegated teams from the 2018/19 Premier League completed the field of participants: Cardiff City , Fulham FC and Huddersfield Town . Norwich City , Sheffield United and Aston Villa are no longer represented as promoted to the Premier League 2019/20 and Rotherham United , Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town as relegated to the EFL League One 2019/20 .

Play-off games
The play-off games are played out after the regular season by means of semi-finals and finals. The final was scheduled for May 25, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The semi-final first legs took place on July 26th and 27th, while the second legs were played on July 29th and 30th. The final is scheduled for August 4, 2020 at Wembley Stadium in London . The winner is promoted to the Premier League .
